The SugarShow, S2, Ep. 7: Get the Scoop on What Makes a Quality Sugar Paste

Today we welcome Mark Essay with Sugar of the Nile! Mark manufactures sugar and is here to answer all of the questions surrounding why sugar does what is does.

During lockdown, we have had quite the adventure keeping business going. One of the things that people started doing was making their own sugar—a little DIY experiment. Mark dives in about why this may or may not work.

There are a few reasons we should use a professional product.
1) Consistency-Your clients should be able to rely on a product and a result.
2) Efficiency-If your paste is consistent, you are able to move forward and become a better sugar professional for your clients.
3) Insurance-If something is off with your sugar, you are protected when you use a professional product!

A quality paste will have no preservatives. That means you have to take care of it. Otherwise, it becomes very susceptible to the elements such as heat, humidity, and air (if left unopened). Mark dives into how to store and use warmers with your sugar to keep it in the best shape possible.

One thing we can’t avoid is the ordering process. There are some things that can happen during shipping with an all-natural product like sugar. Remember, heat and humidity affect your product. For this reason, using a distributor is key. It will be the shortest route to you! Also, think about ordering seasonally to plan ahead and avoid those weather/natural conditions. Freezing can have the same effect!

What causes major coloring shift in sugar? The amount the paste is cooked will affect the color. It should be a nice amber shade. With that being said, it doesn’t mean it is better or worse if it is darker or lighter. The real test is touching the paste to check for soupiness or stickiness.

What makes the paste dry? If your environment is too dry or if you leave the lid off, your paste will lose moisture. Another common problem is not planning ahead and heating the paste too quickly or too much which will also dry it out and make it less effectiveness.

What shift happens to make a paste firmer or softer? It is strictly moisture. The reason why some people add water into their paste during treatment is to extend the life of the paste, which is full of dead skin cells during a treatment and will cause it to dry out. A seasoned sugarist should be the only one trying this.

Listen for more from Mark Essay regarding quality pastes, costs, and even more knowledge around how sugar is made and what to watch out for in your business! Thank you, Mark, for so much information and help!
